Una Calabaza

Una Calabaza (A Pumpkin) is painted in oils on linen canvas board, and measures 12" x 12".

My paintbrush as been lying idle these past few weeks while I was enjoying spring in Santiago de Chile, but I am back in the cold and wet of London now, and am eager to continue work.

I am currently working on a large portrait, begun before I left, but hope soon to start a few canvases inspired by my latest trip to South America.

The picture above was completed recently, and was inspired by the still-lifes of Van Gogh, such as this painting of lemons..

I presume it too was completed rapidly. Despite it's simplicity and crudity, I am very attracted to this work of Vincent's, and others like it, perhaps because it strikes me as unpretentious, honest, and direct; a beautiful act of impulse.

I would like to make a few more studies like this one, when I can, to complement my other Latin American paintings. Pumpkins of the kind I have painted were a common site in every market we visited in Chile, and - as I have just found out - probably originated in Mexico.
